Ever since a kid, and growing up in a country [India] with conservatively available natural resources, we were thought on the importance of conservation. Few of the most important natural resources that we had to be always careful about were water, electricity and paper. Not that they were not inexpensive, but were kind of rationed. Water in the tap meant some specific hours, and people would line up at public water places to fill up the reservoirs. Families could be spotted lined with containers including little vessels and pots and pans and what not to fill and save every drop of water they could.

Tips to save resources:
1. Water - put a brick (wrapped in plastic)/ or a big block of heavy metal (non-corrosive) in commode can result in saving gallons/ liters of water a day. The way it works is that the brick occupies some volume and thus reducing the amount of water in every cycle of flush. This is especially great if you are using old commode which are highly inefficient.
I have even heard of some dual flush button commode, which one chooses depending upon their business, their by not wasting a full flush capacity.
2. Water - reduce the flow of water in tap, specially the one's in kitchen. All you have to do is, open the cabinet door, and twist the water knobs till you feel the water pressure is right in tap. You can again save gallons/ liters of water by this process. Remember, you can do the same throughout your home/ apartment, in each and every sink.
3. Water - Using dishwasher is a very efficient way to save water. Not just that, it also saves on soap (soap is chemical, and using less of soap means less chemical getting mixed up in drainage water). Needless to say that if its just one dish, or few, use hands as dishwasher will result in more water consumption.
4. Water - Car wash. Take your car to a car wash. It is more efficient way of car washing than running the water hose for 15 minutes at home to wash your car.
5. Water - Sprinklers. Just like car wash, sprinklers are efficient way to care for your yards and gardens. They save water, and provide enough water in a manner where it gets absorbed by the earth, and doesn't get washed away.

Will continue write more about electricity and others.
